Short Story: Into the game – Act 1

Chapter 4: Squaring off

They burst out of the alleyway and into the town square and everything went silent.

Windows slammed shut. Doors locked. Lanterns flickered out one by one. Every NPC in sight vanished behind shutters, leaving the square exposed and empty, a perfect circle of open space with nowhere to hide. The only cover was a small water feature in the centre, useless against what was coming.

Claire’s breath hitched. “That’s… not good.”

Daniel didn’t answer. He felt it too the air thickening, the world holding its breath. A slow fog crept across the cobblestones, swallowing the edges of the square and making it harder to see.

A shadow swept overhead.

They looked up just as a massive dragon descended from the sky, wings beating the air into violent gusts. It landed with a bone‑shaking thud, scales shimmering like molten metal, eyes burning with the same corrupted red glow as the guards.

Speaking of guards dozens of them poured into the square, forming a tight ring around Daniel and Claire. Swords drawn. Shields raised. No escape. On the rooftops, archers aimed down at them, arrows glinting in the fog.

Claire swallowed. “I think we’re trapped.”

Daniel tightened his grip on his staff. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “I think that’s the point.”

The dragon roared a deep, shuddering sound that rattled the windows. Then its voice shifted, slowing, warping, becoming horribly familiar.

“Cl… aire…”

“Surrender.”

“Help me.”

“Give up… you can’t escape…”

Claire’s eyes widened. Tears welled instantly. “Ant? Ant, what happened?”

Daniel grabbed her hand and pulled her behind him, shielding her from the dragon’s gaze.

The corrupted red glow in its eyes flickered just once, like something trapped inside was trying to break through. The voice fractured again, two tones overlapping, not in harmony but in conflict, speaking over each other like two minds fighting for control.

“Both of you will die here,” the dragon growled. “Nothing you can do… unless you surrender.”

Daniel’s cloak lifted from his shoulders as if caught in an invisible wind. It drifted toward Claire and wrapped around her like a living thing. Before she could react, she vanished, invisible, hidden from sight.

Daniel leaned close and whispered, “Run. Deal with the guards. I’ll handle the dragon.”

Claire squeezed his hand once fear, trust, and determination all in that single touch then slipped away into the fog.

Daniel stepped forward alone.

The dragon lowered its head.

A torrent of fire erupted from its jaws, engulfing Daniel in a blinding wall of flame.

Claire froze mid‑run, horror gripping her chest until she saw him still standing, completely unharmed, the fire curling harmlessly around him like a protective veil. His staff glowed. Embers danced across his rainbow‑streaked hair.

He turned his head just enough for her to see his face.

And winked.

Cold started to warm up rather quickly, like sun waking up the world with its heat.
