Music Monday: Pink pony club by Chappell Roan

Music Monday: Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan

Pink Pony Club opens up with a piano. It’s a pop song about a woman dancing at a gay club in West Hollywood, and it tells a story within the first minute, taking you on a journey. What makes this song so good is the composition; it starts off slow before ramping up, taking us with her as she tells the story.

Honestly, it’s musical genius and reminds me of a few great artists and lyricists. It sounds like pop-disco mixed with a retro 80s synth vibe. Not just that, it’s a very queer and camp song. It’s right in your face and does not hide it at all. It is bold and emotional, especially given the lyrics.

Here is the important point: it’s a frankly wonderful, feminine song. It highlights the queer experience and becomes a rallying call. It’s a lesbian pop song that reminds us about the relationship and the struggle the LGBTQ community holds together.

Chappell Roan is a complete treat, and her music is a wonderful expression. This was originally released in 2020 before getting released again in 2023. It took a while before people noticed it. Roan has just one album and 14 singles so far. It’s not my favorite song from her, but my god, it feels so good.

Every time I listen to it, I just end up smiling with pure joy. It feels very much like a rebellion and a celebration. It’s a queer party anthem and the song that helped kickstart her career. Much like the album, it was a sleeper hit that slowly grew over time.

Anyway, give it a listen. You’ve most likely already heard it, but she has incredible musical range and has been willing to throw her hat into so many genres. I really should listen to her more.
