Music Monday: Dog Days Are Over by Florence + The Machine

I have been meaning to write about this one for a while. Florence + The Machine have such a great take on indie rock music with that folk twist. It is an anthem about difficult days being over and the happy ones finally arriving. It is about surviving the worst and coming out on the other side. For me, this song speaks to me deeply as a queer person.

The song starts slow, layering elements on top of each other until the full sound takes shape. What I love is how it speeds up, builds to a peak, and then strips it all back again, only to restart. It perfectly captures how a dog day feels. It is stagnant, humid, and dragging on. It feels like the transition from the blooming flowers of spring into a hot, dry, heavy summer.

The vocals are amazing. It is not just a catchy song, but one that makes you breathe in. You take in the song and relax. It comes from the group debut album too. There are some elements of soul music here which you do not often see in indie rock groups.

The most clever part is how it feels like it is going to end before building itself back up again. It is a brilliant metaphor for finding a second wind. I have not listened to their entire catalog, but songs like this highlight how incredible they are. It is not just the music, but how the lyrics and the composition work together. I plan on listening to more of their songs. It really is the perfect track for the end of summer.
