Music Monday: Breaking Bad metal instrumental by Supralighting

Music Monday: Breaking Bad metal instrumental by Supralighting

For May, I have decided to go with pop culture music. This is a small hint at what this month’s blog posts are going to be about, so enjoy these upcoming posts based on that theme. It won’t be just Music Monday with this focus; I’ll be diving into the culture behind the music as well.

Week one starts with Breaking Bad. This drama is often considered the last of the “Golden Age of TV,” or what some call “Prestige TV,” which roughly spanned the years between 2000 and 2023. It represents a third golden age, even though the industry is now facing some massive problems. It is on my recommended list for a very good reason, and its sequels like Better Call Saul are just as good. Looking at the timeline, the original series ran from 2008 until 2013, while Saul was on from 2015 to 2022. You basically have two shows, one right in the middle and one near the end of that era.

It begs the question: what music will I be showcasing for a show this iconic? I settled on a metal instrumental version of the theme. Strictly speaking, this is not just the Breaking Bad theme but a unique version of it. I wanted to highlight a very small YouTube channel and artist called supralightning. It goes to show that when a show has such a massive impact, people will cover the theme and create entire pieces of music inspired by it. The Breaking Bad theme is already iconic, but this track showcases someone trying to make something entirely different with that sound. It is heavy, intense, and fits the gritty nature of the series perfectly. As a piece of music, it is technically quite impressive. I think it speaks volumes for how good of an artist they are. When I listen to this, I can see the show playing in the back of my mind.

You can find all the music he has released over on Bandcamp here. It is a great example of how one piece of media can inspire a completely different genre of art.
