Is the Scrubs renewal any good?

Is the Scrubs renewal any good?

Scrubs returns to form. Season 10 forgets what happened in Season 9. It completely ignores it, and so do I. The reason Season 9 even exists is actually quite wholesome. The creator and showrunner wanted to keep people employed during the recession. The studio asked him to carry the series for another season because they lacked content and needed a hit. It was meant to be a spin-off, not Scrubs proper, but it eventually morphed into the ninth season.

Season 8 was a perfect ending, which explains why Season 9 felt so weird. It had some good moments, but it was lacking overall.

So, is the renewal any good? Yes. It is a return to what we knew and carries on what the original series started. It deals heavily with burnout, featuring returning co-stars and J.D. taking the reins of the show. It makes sense because when we last saw them, Dr. Cox was Chief of Medicine. That was almost 20 years ago. Of course he would be tired now that he is in his 60s. Beyond that, Turk and others are showing realistic signs of stress and burnout.

The revival feels familiar yet fresh. Everything you liked is here, including new characters and old ones. It is genuinely good and honestly quite funny. The J.D. and Turk chemistry is back just like it used to be. I am hoping we see more of Dr. Cox and references to past characters whose actors are no longer with us.

What I am enjoying most is that the new characters are given room to breathe. The old guard isn’t just taking up all the space. They act as supporting characters now and are used sparingly. I am trying to avoid spoilers here. Bill Lawrence can still produce and create great TV. Given how much the television landscape has changed, I am surprised by how well this works. I am hoping this gets a long run, but only time will tell.
